Irene Dunlap is the only woman ever elected to the U.S. Congress from West Virginia. She served sixteen terms in the House of Representatives, the last ten of which were in the minority party. Her time in Congress was marked by high levels of activity; she sponsored more than 100 bills and co-sponsored over 300 others, chairing both the Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Committee on Education and Labor
